they were traveling - not feeding or jumping - but it was still neat to watch them
we think there was 4 traveling together -we saw them just past "Beluga Point"
coming up for air
oh yeah - there was seal too!
belugas are white (from Russian word) or a grayish color
more wildlife - beluga whales!
probably a curious child
dall sheep down by the road - we pulled over to take pix
evidence of fall - colors are starting to change
more ghost forests (from earthquake)
it's beautiful up here - come visit
my favorite animal
even the ducks were happy
porcupine
mother and child
a female elk with 2 kids in tow
bluff charge - still kind of scary
is he charging? I don't care if there is a fence - I moved
he spotted someone (me) checking out his harem
The bull elk (biggest in the deer family besides moose)
elk herd coming up over the hill
reading about the animals at the conservation center
fireweed
What a great Labor Day!
life is good :)
how about a dip in the pond?
now what?
time for rest
happy bear
this brown bear was just chillin - soakin up some Vitamin D
check out those claws!
this brown bear was getting fed hamburgers by a worker
more glaciers in view
bison relaxing on a sunny day - they are eventually sent to repopulate a bison herd in the Aleutians
Were Santa's reindeer female?
mug shot of a caribou - she was curious (yes, female caribou have antlers too - they actually keep them longer than males)
this caribou seemed to be posing for us (great background, eh?)
Caribou - did you know reindeer are domesticated caribou?
shaking it off
Alaska Wildlife Conservation Center (our destination for this Labor Day)
black bear up close (on other side of a fence)
baby musk ox - all the animals are injured or orphaned at this center
this one has shed the velvet in anticipation of rutting season
this moose still has the velvet on his antlers
Remains from the 1964 earthquake - from the destroyed town of Portage (moved inland after the quake)
beautiful wilderness
Bison - this image makes me think of the song "American the Beautiful"
the dead trees are remnants of the 1964 earthquake
hanging glacier off in the distance
we waited all weekend for a sunny day!
